Colson Timblin
I’ve been working on these drawings over the past year. The people in the drawings never look at each other. Some of them are reaching out their arms but they never touch each other. Their bodies are full of holes. Their faces are expressionless. They feel disconnected and lonely as if something were missing and they’ve given up trying to find it. In regards to Saudade, I feel that they evoke that ambiguous melancholic longing for something or someone that’s no longer around and will never be the same again, a feeling I heavily relate to.
Where do you draw inspiration from? Name some artists who inspire you:
Remy Charlip, Daniel Johnston, Sufjan Stevens, Margaret Kilgallen, Frank Ocean, Paper Moses, Rich Mullins, Greta Kline
Describe your aesthetic when it comes to art:
Friendship, honesty, the fruit of the Spirit
Other than illustration, what mediums do you work in?
I’ve been into photography the longest, I also make lo-fi pop music and record it with the voice memo app on my iPhone, and most recently I’ve started making documentaries with my girlfriend, Emma. Teaching myself animation, tattoos, embroidery, and sculpture next!
Tell us about your background in film:
Film, photo, video, whatever you want to call it, were the first creative outlet for me. Looking back, it felt more accessible than something like drawing or painting at the time. I started taking these 10 second videos on these old flip phones my parents would give me whenever they’d get an upgrade. And then in middle school my grandpa gave me an old camera of his, which was pretty cool. Once I got an iPhone I basically took all my photo and video on that. I’ve made music videos for my friends, promo videos for events or zines I’ve made, stop motion animations, etc. Of all the different art forms I’m into, film feels like a really special intersection of visual art and music. So I went to film school for a year, but didn’t feel like I fit in. It turned out to be more narrowly focused than I thought it’d be (I switched to studying design and sculpture now instead and am pretty excited about it). Lately I’ve been making documentaries with my girlfriend and that’s been super fun and rewarding. Definitely going to keep doing that more and more. I’ve got big plans moving forward haha.
